Term 3

Term 3 has started back with a bang!

We were extremely lucky to have Mrs Horan teaching us during Week 1 while Mrs Knyvett was away. Throughout the week we worked in groups to complete the Survivor Shake-Out Challenge. From working through the challenges we have strengthened our team work skills, and thought creatively to problem solve.
(Keep checking back in over the next few days to see excerpts from our work and the final team standings.)

Things to note this term:
Cross-Country
Stanley Avenue School Cross-Country is in Week 4. To help prepare for the event and increase our fitness we are training around the cross-country track (around the Wetlands) every Tuesday and Thursday. It has been fantastic to see the effort everyone has been putting in, and to most students remembering their change of clothes and running shoes.

Winter Olympics Lunches
This week the Winter Olympics Team are selling hot Chicken rolls for $2.50. Please support the team and get your orders in by Wednesday. It is important that orders are in by Wednesday as Mrs Hayes needs to buy the ingredients on Wednesday afternoon.

Speeches
The School Speech Finals are set to be held during Week 8 of this term. All Year 6-8 students are required to write and preform their speech to their class, where the top speeches will be selected to represent their class at the School Speech Final.
During the past week we have been looking at Informative and Persuasive Speeches and the important components of each. We have brainstormed a list of topics that interest us and have begun planning our speeches. Over the next few weeks we will be busy writing, editing and rehearsing our speeches.
Year 6 speeches must be between 2-3 minutes and Year 7/8 speeches must be between 3-4 minutes.

Stanley/Winter Olympics
Please make sure that you have received a notice home recently about what to expect during Week 6 with Stanley and Winter Olympics. If you have any questions please contact Mrs Knyvett.

Science Fair

Today Room 3 opened the doors to our amazing Science Fair and showcased our incredible animal creations.

It was fantastic to have so many excited visitors come through and ask in-depth questions that challenged our knowledge of our animals. We were blown away by the questioning of some of the junior classes, and were particularly excited to show around our family members.

A huge thank you to all the visitors who came in and admired our animals today. It really was fantastic to see so many classes, teachers, parents, caregivers and other family members.

Check out some of the photos from our Science Fair today.

Winter and Stanley Olympics

The 2017 Stanley Avenue School Winter Olympics Team was announced at the beginning of this term. They have all been flat out training for their nominated sports, improving their fitness and selling chocolate bars!

You can support their fundraising efforts by purchasing chocolate bars directly from a Winter Olympics Team Member, or by purchasing a lunch item from school on Thursdays. Each Thursday this term will be a hot meal option - which is advertised the week before. Please get your orders in by Wednesday to allow for ease of food preparation, and to make sure you don't miss out. The food on sale for Week 8 is American Hot Dogs!

While the Winter Olympics Team is off busy preparing their Chant, learning about Teamwork and practising their sports the rest of Rooms 1, 2 and 3 are busy preparing for the very exciting Stanley Olympics. Over the past few weeks it has been fantastic to see the teamwork developing, as everyone looks to prepare their team for our action packed week!

Science

This term Room 3 is busy learning all about animals and their adaptations.

As part of our learning we have been carrying out experiments to understand why animals have the adaptations that they do.

We have looked at some of the different ways animals keep warm, and currently have an experiment underway testing how successful wool, blubber and skin are at insulating animals.

Why birds have the beaks they do has also been an experimental focus for us. Here are a sample of pictures of us using a range of tools to represent different 'beaks' and see how successful they are at 'eating' a range of ingredients.

Keep an eye out over the coming weeks as we continue to learn more about animals adaptations and work towards creating our own animals!

Zebong - Storyteller

Stanley Avenue was lucky to have a guest storyteller come and visit us on Friday to round off our amazing Book Fair Week celebration.

Zebong is very talented and humorous storyteller who kept us all entertained with his story of 'John and his magic ukulele'.

Check out some of the pictures that captured our fun!

Welcome Back - Fire Alarms

Welcome back to Room 3 for what is shaping up to be a very exciting Term 2!

The term got off to a buzzing start - with the fire alarm going off first thing Monday morning, before the first bell had even gone. A big thank you to all the Room 3 students and parents who showed amazing leadership and initiative upon hearing the alarm. It was great to see so many of you going and helping the younger students, taking them out to the back field, and helping them find their class and teacher.

A reminder to all - If you hear the school alarm ringing continuously, this is a fire alarm. It is not a drill, and needs to be treated seriously. Our meeting point when at school is out on our back field, which is where all classrooms will assemble. When the alarm is ringing continuously you do not go into classrooms, or go looking for anyone. Teachers will clear their allocated areas and assemble students on the back field.

Please - if you are on the school grounds at any time (no matter if you are a student, parent, grandparent, whanau member, community member or any other visitor) and you hear the fire alarm ringing continuously go calmly and sensibly to the back field. Once on the back field line up in your classes and wait patiently for the class roll call.

Thank you so very much for your support and assistance with this.
